Forum: etree Subject: Extending permission for side projects and alternate names of a band

Hi, I am the webmaster for the subdudes, one of the bands that is included here. I was probably primarily responsible for convincing the band to become taper friendly about 10 years ago.

What is the LMA process for extending permission for previous incarnations of a band; related bands or bands with different names that are essentially the same lineup; or side projects of the same members?

It is possible to define a "collection" as covering multiple band names?

For instance, the subdudes were known as The Dudes in 2002. It was essentially the same lineup, and they were taper-friendly at that time, too. I have uploaded at least one show from this era and named it as subdudes, but in reality that's not correct. I'd like to be able to define the creator as The Dudes.

Similarly, the subdudes existed in slightly different permutations (The Works, the Cartoons, etc.) extending at least 10 years before they were known as the subdudes. I would like to archive shows of these pre-subdudes bands as part of the subdudes collection, as well.

And finally, there are side projects: The Tommy Malone Band (mostly in 2001, but likely to resume next year), the 3 Twins, The Prodigal Sons, etc. All of these bands are permutations of the subdudes (minus one or more members of the main group).

I know this covers a lot of ground. If I need to clarify, let me know.

Is there an arrangement where an individual could be named as a moderator or something to make decisions like this for a given band? If so, I could get one or more of the principals to explicitly do that for me, if that would help.

Thanks,

Richard Russell

Hi Richard - it's totally up to you how you want to handle this. From a technical perspective, it's not possible to have the "creator" field reflect anything other than the name of the collection it's in. You can always put the band name into the "Notes" field of the show and it'll be completely searchable, just not quite as easy as the clickable creator and band fields.

If you want a show to have the band's name in the "creator" field, we can create a new collection for that band's name - there's nothing that says you can't have a collection with just one show in it. We can create a new collection for "The Dudes" and move that one show into it if you like.

Another option would be to create a "Subdudes side projects" collection (like we did with the Edie Brickell side projects and aliases collection).

Let us know how you want to handle it and we'll get busy making it happen!

Hi, thanks for the quick response!

I think I'd prefer to have separate collections. I'd rather err on the side of being precise, I think too many neophytes who download something and see it's by Band X don't look closely and see that's really by Band Pre-X. So then the recordings get into circulation as by Band X. I'm just being anal, I know.

That said, could we create a few new collections?
- The Dudes
- The Cartoons
- Tommy Malone Band
- 3 Twins

These bands all share the same lineup as today's subdudes (not necessarily ALL of the members, though), except the Cartoons, which included another band member who is deceased.

Is that do-able? If it's something I can do myself, I'll be glad to.

After that's accomplished, there are three "subdudes" recordings that should properly be Dudes shows: 3/29/2002 and 12/5/2002 (two versions).

Thanks!
Richard

Enjoyed some Tiny Town shows. Would be cool to see them in the mix.
